The center of camp every night was the dining tent and the nearby stage. The evening's entertainment would start out with some news of the day along with information on tomorrow's weather and route. That would be followed by some heartfelt touchy-feely story from one of the 43 charities we were supporting. After the heart-tugging, there would be real musical entertainment. Except in Hillsboro where we were treated to a visit by two representatives of the local Chamber of Commerce who wanted to let us know that there were zillions of bargain antiques in millions of under-trafficked antique shops in Hillsboro, the antique capital of Texas. And, by the way, did we mention antiques? And it's just a short drive from Dallas. And there are antiques. Well, at least they did sort of know their audience, and they were nice enough to put on AIDS Ride t-shirts, which was better than lots of people who wanted our money but didn't want to be sullied by wearing the "A" word. But back to the point, every night this stage had to be assembled and every morning it had to be disassembled and trucked to the next town. The guy you see in the picture was the staff guy in charge of the stage, the sound system (it's always a really good sound system!), and lighting. |
