What a picture, huh? That's me, and behind me is Michael, and behind us are a few dozen of our hundreds of faithful followers struggling to stay on our wheel.
"How did you get this great picture?" many ask us. We claim no miracles. There is one (only 1) professional photographer who comes along on the AIDS Rides. He's the only commercial hanger-on with the AIDS Rides. An exception is made for him because he did it on the very first AIDS Ride, and he is still paying the debts that resulted when his son died from AIDS.
He posts himself at a few strategic spots along the route during the day. He numbers his rolls of film and has a sign propped near him displaying his current roll number. When we see him ahead we slap on a silly smile and make our legs look industrious. We take mental note of the roll number. By the time we reach camp, much later in the day, he will be there with the prints all strung from clothesline. We locate our roll number and paw through the photos until we find us. If it's a suitable picture we can buy two copies for only $5. A deal, huh?!
