On the road to Austin

We had started out from Dallas trying to make a route like we would back in New England. That is, something that roughly parallels, but mostly avoids the major motor vehicle routes. This just wouldn't work in Texas as too often the small roads would end by dumping us right into I-35. After half a day of riding we learned to just go with the flow. Interstate highways in Texas are parallelled nearly their entire length by small access roads which are great for cycling. You can see ours on the right in this photo. We had to suffer the white noise from the traffic on the interstate, but that was about the only drawback. It was a direct, easy to follow, well-paved route and the state of Texas had designed major highway interchanges around these small access roads so that we could shoot right through in perfect safety, sometimes getting a straighter road than the motor vehicles. And we got all the convenience of seeing every Wal-Mart on I-35 between Dallas and Austin.
