On the road to Austin

We had been warned about Texas, and everyone who warned us about Texas warned us especially to avoid Waco if at all possible. Waco is rumored to be a wild city full of truckers and brawlers and those never-to-be-mentioned crazy religious cults and klansmen. Our trepidations were not decreased as we traveled toward Waco and saw billboards inviting us to the Texas Ranger [we are not talking sports here] Museum and Hall of Fame and the Dr. Pepper Museum.

Probably many of you know that this is where Dr. Pepper got its start, but I had never given it much thought. I guess I was under the impression that if you know that Coca-Cola started in Atlanta then you know pretty much all you need to know on the history of great American soft drinks.

We skipped the museums of Waco, but we had lunch at a great (but unproclaimed) barbecue dive and came away with a very favorable impression of Waco. Check out Michna's Bar-B-Que at 28th and Franklin next time you're down that way. I had a Big Red with my grease. It's even sweeter than Dr. Pepper.
